Optimised Litter Aeration and Addition for Ammonia Emission Reduction

Aeration and litter addition is a good practice in litter management that aims to maintain dry, and friable bedding throughout the production cycle. It consists of regularly aerating or lightly stirring the litter and adding fresh material in wet or compacted areas to limit moisture accumulation. On farm, this practice can be implemented through periodic mechanical aeration under drinker lines and targeted litter additions, combined with appropriate ventilation, temperature, and humidity control. By improving litter conditions, this practice directly contributes to the challenge of reducing ammonia emissions, as excess moisture and compaction are key drivers of ammonia release in poultry houses. In addition to lowering environmental impacts and improving air quality, aeration and litter addition support animal health and welfare, and working conditions, making it a central lever for more sustainable farming.
