In Finland, water circulation central heating has been the most common form of heating for long time. Compared to gas heating, with water circulation central heating the air humidity is lower and bedding stays dryer throughout rearing period. Water circulation central heating also helps to control the humidity inside the rearing house even in warmer seasons. Good rearing conditions support the bird´s well-being and health, which improves cost-effectiveness and reduces the need for medication. With low disease pressure, there is less need for antibiotic treatment. Low disease pressure supports better growth and quality. Mortality is lower. The feed efficiency is better, and broilers have healthy foot pads. In 2022 in Finland, the weighted average foot pad score was 2.64/200 points. In the Finnish rearing method, stocking density and foot pad scores do not correlate with each other, as our broiler production farms have sufficient heating capacity and effective control of conditions. Central heating and its installation costs approx. 150.000 € (4.000 m2). The costs do not include the heating center. The technology exists and is available. The practice plays a significant role in Finland´s good production results. There is plenty of experience and results in practice. All kind of energy can be used for heating the circulated water. In Finland we use most often woodchips and more often combined with solar energy.
