Use of ImproBed to Reduce Ammonia Emissions

A major sustainability challenge for the broiler sector is to reduce ammonia emissions that arise from wet litter. ImproBed is an innovative litter solution specifically designed to reduce ammonia emissions in broiler production. The pelleted mixture, composed of 80% straw and 20% sodium bisulfate, (a pH-reducing additive), lowers the pH value of the litter, thereby preventing the conversion of uric acid into gaseous ammonia. ImproBed is applied evenly as litter at the start of the fattening cycle and can be reapplied during the cycle. Its effect is based on the long-term pH-reducing of the litter. Ammonia is bound in the form of ammonium sulfate within the litter or manure layer. The recommended application rate is 1.5 kg per m². Delivery is made in big bags.

By specifically reducing the pH value of the litter, microbial activity is inhibited and the formation of ammonia is significantly reduced. This effect has a positive impact on the animals’ foot pad health. In addition, ammonia is bound in the litter or manure layer in the form of ammonium sulfate. The effectiveness of ImproBed has been proven through extensive research and measurements.
