Improving gut microbiome by early probiotic administration

In intensive farming, it is essential to create a comfortable environment for animals, ensuring that they remain healthy, robust, and resilient to stress as well as diseases. This is particularly important because well-maintained environment can greatly influence the well-being and productivity of the animals. When the chicks first arrive in the breeding facility, they are placed in an environment carefully designed to mimic the warmth and protection provided by mother hen. At the same time, the chicks are supplied with the necessary feed and clean water to support their early growth and development. However, a critical challenge arises because the environment is typically quite aseptic. Unlike in nature, where the mother hen would nurture and feed her chicks, thereby imparting to them the essential starter microbiome for the development of a healthy and balanced gut flora, this natural process is absent in intensive farming settings. Without this microbiome transfer, the chicks may face difficulties in establishing a proper gut flora, which can have long-term implications for their health and immune system development.
