Good Management Practices to Reduce the Impact of Enterococcus in Broiler Chickens

This good practice addresses the challenge of reducing the persistence and recurrence of Enterococcus in broiler chickens.

Enterococcus spp. bacteria are part of the normal microbiota of the intestinal tract of broiler chickens. However, certain situations may cause alterations in intestinal permeability in the animals, which can lead to infections. For this reason, addressing the primary causes of increased permeability can prevent Enterococcus infections. There are many types of Enterococcus, which can produce different clinical signs.

This good practice focuses on prevention through a set of management practices aimed at maintaining a good balance of the chicken’s intestinal microbiota, and, on the other hand, avoiding changes in intestinal permeability that would allow pathogens to pass into the systemic circulation and, from there, affect other organs and tissues.
