Farm biosecurity incorporates many different practices and infrastructure. An important good practice is to have a fence up to 2m. height around the farm. Unauthorized visitors, wildlife and other domestic animals pose a very important biosecurity risk to the farm. Fencing the surrounding area greatly reduces the possibility of introduction of many biological and other risks to the broiler flock. This barrier is normally supported on a concrete base, to further prevent animals from entering the farm. The exact type of fence is adopted to each farm environment, i.e. kind of terrain (field, mountain, etc.) and expected risks (large or small animals in the area, etc.). The average estimated cost is approx. 500 euros per 1000 square meters of area around the farm. In most cases can be easily applied within a few days. It provides an additional security against deliberate actions that can compromise farm operation and improves farm personnel and infrastructure security. By this improved biosecurity the farm efficiency is also enhanced and usually due to better and consistently good flock health. Carbon footprint of the farm might also be slightly improved, especially in areas with many biological risks that can enter the farm through visitors, animals, etc. This practice can easily be applied in any farm and different rearing systems.
