Lighting affects poultry behaviour, welfare and productivity. In practice, many farms still use static, uniform lighting designed for human vision, even though birds perceive light differently and react to changes in intensity and spectrum. Static lighting does not reflect age-dependent behavioural needs and can lead to disturbances in resting behaviour and daily rhythms, particularly when abrupt changes in light conditions occur.
The NatureDynamics system provides a bird-friendly, dynamic lighting in the broiler house. Light intensity and colour gradually change throughout the day to support daily rhythms, including a sunrise/sunset lighting to mimic nature and across the cycle to better reflect age-dependent behaviour needs. Farmers can control the lighting from their phones, making it easy to adjust the light. The lamps only require power, so no additional data cables are needed.
While there are up-front costs for the installation of the lights (price dependent on the size of the houses), there are several benefits to switching to the NatureDynamics lighting system. Farm benefits include an increase in the final bird weights by approximately 3%, improvement of feed efficiency with a 3-5% reduction in feed conversion rate, support in muscle development and reduction in myopathies. Overall, application of the system can help to support calmer behaviours, more stable daily rhythms, and improve the activity-rest balance throughout the production cycle. Leading to an overall positive impact on the welfare of the flock.
