Collecting Transport Related Animal Welfare Data

The Swedish Poultry Meats Association is a unique industry organisation that takes responsibility for the entire value chain in Swedish broiler production, from breeding and rearing to transport and slaughter. The various quality programmes, which all members must follow, are stricter than the national animal welfare legislation. The programmes also include the handling of animals from loading on the farm to the slaughterhouse. Animal welfare inspections are carried out during catching, loading, transport and slaughter together with education of the catching teams. Alongside these interventions, transport related animal welfare data is collected from every flock that is send to slaughter. The data is used to prevent systematic animal welfare problems during catching, loading, transport and slaughter, as KPI’s to measure improvement and as a base for the education carried out to improve handling of the birds.
